Sam is emerging as a talented improvising jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player in the South West and around the country.
Sam is very fortunate to have been a regular member and soloist with the Mike Westbrook Big Band since 2010, and in a big band setting has worked with musicians such as Mike Westbrook OBE, Clare Teal, The Black Voices, Kate Westbrook, Malcolm Edmonstone, Mike Mower, Jon Scott, Noel Langley, Mark Bassey, Alan Wakeman, Pete Whyman, Karen Street, Roz Harding, Billie Bottle, and Lou Gare amongst many others.
Recently he has recorded A Bigger Show Live with Mike Westbrook’s Uncommon Orchestra – a critically-acclaimed double album produced by Jon Hiseman, released on ASC records on 5th February 2016. The album has received international airplay on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6 Music, Jazz FM and RAI Radio 3 (Italy) and was premiered in London’s Kings Place on May 20th 2016 and has since played nationally at notable venues such as St Ives Jazz Club, The Albany (London), The Apex (Bury St Edmonds) and The Blue Orange Theatre (Birmingham Jazz).
He is also currently emerging as an up-and-coming jazz improviser in smaller ensembles on the UK jazz scene.
His own projects include the Sam Massey Ensemble, a 7-piece jazz-funk group dedicated to performing Sam’s own compositions and arrangements, as well as those of other British jazz luminaries including Kenny Wheeler, Steve Waterman, Laurence Cottle, Edward Leaker and Lewis Riley.
He also runs his own jazz quartet and quintet which has performed across the South West – please visit the Media page for audio and video examples of these.
As bandleader and sideman, Sam has performed alongside many exciting musicians in the jazz field including: Andy Williamson, Andy Tweed, Andy Tween, Annika Skoogh, Chris McMurran, Edward Leaker, Harry Diplock, Jade Gall, Jamie Benzies, Julien Alenda, Jim Rintoul, Lewis Riley, Mark Bassey, Mark Whitlam, Nick Malcolm, Steve Dow, Toby Boalch, Tom Green and Will Harris amongst others.
Sam has also recently set up a classical crossover chamber ensemble called ‘Superlocrian‘, performing his original arrangements and compositions for 2 trumpets, 2 woodwind, trombone and tuba.
Its debut performance to a packed Nourish Festival (billed alongside Steven Isserlis and Noriko Ogawa) in 2017 was extremely well received – for more information and audio examples, please visit the ‘Superlocrian‘ page.
He is also playing regularly with acclaimed ska band The Simmertones, who regularly perform to sell-out crowds around the country, including prestigious events such as the London International Ska Festival. Sam performs on their new single, Run For Your Life, which is available for download now and has already received airplay on BBC Radio 2 & BBC Radio 6 Music.
Sam has also had the privilege of playing cornet with one of Cornwall’s finest brass bands – Roche Brass – in a number of concerts and was fortunate enough to be involved in the winning performance under Garry Cutt at the 2015 West of England Regional Brass Band Championships (First Section).
